Minnesota Twins: Please Make an It Gets Better video!

The Issue

Recently, a San Francisco Giants fan petitioned for the team to make a video for the It Gets Better campaign. His campaign was successful, and the Giants became the first professional sports team to make a video for the campaign. I believe that the Minnesota Twins should follow the example set by the Giants and create an It Gets Better video.

The It Gets Better campaign started last fall in response to the alarming rash of gay teen suicides around the country. In the past year alone, the suicides of two gay Minnesota teens (Justin Aaberg and Lance Lundsten) made national headlines. On May 21st 2011, Minnesota made national headlines once again when the state Senate approved a proposed constitutional amendment that would define marriage as between one man and one woman. The amendment will now appear on the statewide ballot in November 2012.

Given these recent events, I believe that the Minnesota Twins creating an It Gets Better video would be a way to bring hope not only to Minnesota, but also the rest of the country. The Minnesota Twins have gained the respect of millions of fans due to their status as one of the "underdogs" of the baseball world, and many of the Twins' players and staff have Minnesota roots (most notably star catcher Joe Mauer). It's time for this organization admired by many to stand up for their fellow underdogs, on a state and national level.
