Stop restricting scientists from discussing their research with the public
The Issue
The scientific community relies heavily on the free flow of information. No researcher should feel undue political pressure when discussing his or her research findings. And yet, this is precisely what the Government of Canada has been doing. As detailed in the February 29 edition of the scientific journal Nature, Canadian scientists are being censored when their findings are inconsistent with the government's agenda. This has to stop.
As the late Carl Sagan put it: "The suppression of uncomfortable ideas may be common in religion or in politics, but it is not the path to knowledge, and there's no place for it in the endeavor of science."
We, the undersigned, request that the Ministry of Industry, Science and Technology allow publicly-funded scientists to speak freely about their research without political influence.
