Stop the killings of Elephants & Wild Cats

The issue

INDIA NEEDS US - INDIA NEEDS US - INDIA NEEDS US CALLING ALL ACTIVISTS NOW ALL INDIAN ELEPHANTS WILD CATS AND RHINOCEROS ARE IN DANGER

Over the past 10 years we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of Elephants, and wild Cats being slaughtered by the locals of India that hunt them down and either shoot them or beat them with sticks until there dead. Only last week again we saw an angry mob of villagers hunt down a Bengal Tiger with sticks and stones and beat the poor animal until it managed to gain refuge in a house. Sadly in self defense a local game warder shot the Bengal Tiger dead that is protected by international 1973 Cites act : CITES Appendix 1. (All wildcats are listed on CITES Appendix I or II). All tigers are protected under the auspices of the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Elephants to are being murdered by the Indian locals. The exact same method is used more or less. Indian Elephant or Elephas Maximus are an endangered species. They are protected by the the Endangered Species Act Cites. www.cites.org

Why are these animals being killed though ? there are 2 reasons the first I will exaplin which is regarding the above data.

Wild cats such as normal Leopard, Snow Leopard although rare, and the Bengal Tiger are the main wild cats that roam in to villages looking for food to eat or some where to rest. Their habitat is being destroyed along with that of the Elephants. Illegal logging, noise pollution and new housing complexes are the most to blame in this area. Which is taking their natural habitat away.

This then in turn forces the Cats out of their wild habitat from which they would normaly find food and clean water to drink for themselves and their cubs. The Tigers or Leopards then go looking for food in the local towns from which they are more scared of humans than humans are of them. Sadly if there caught they are mostly killed. On occasions wildlife wardens have managed to rescue them and then release them back in to the wild.

The Indian Elephant is going through the same sad story of the wild cats. Their habitat is being taken away, and there then hunted down in more or less the same way. The Indian Elephant is being blamed for many issues from, tearing up trees, to land and wrecking villagers homes. However this breed of Elephant (Elephus Maximus) can not hear very well, so it can not sense the danger of humans coming torwards them which then leads to the Elephant being harmed or killed.

WHAT DO WE WANT THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT AND MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT & FORESTS TO NOW DO ?

1) An education scheme set up that will teach the locals on what to do in an event of a wild Cat or Elephant entering their land.

2) Villagers convicted under the cites agreement should they harm or kill any wild Cat or Elephant that roams in to their districts.

3) Local meetings on how to secure boundries thus keeping out wild animals using ONLY humane methods and ONLY in the act of self defense to use a sedatve darting gun.

3a) ON FINDING A WILD CAT SLEEPING (IN A RESIDENT AREA) A SEDATION DART IS TO BE USED AND CONSERVATION TEAMS CALLED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO MOVE THE ANIMAL AT THE FIRST CHANCE.

3b) In the event of on Elephant roaming then there is to be NO HUNTING of the Elephant by angry mobs but more a team set in place thaat can assist peacefuly and keep the croud control down using force where needed.

4) A select group of villagers to be trained in how to handle an event of wildlife entering and to police their local villages thus creating a feeling of safety. Locals can report to them if they have seen wildlife in any area and what measures can be done to protect. Also the trained villagers must report to local conservation teams on the first instance if a situation they think could rise out of control.

5) An emergency red phone that is similar to that of what is used on road-sides all over the world that locals can use in the event of an extreme emergency to stop anyone being attaked or killed.

6) Government to plough more money in to the conservation teams in these areas, also to help in securing land and properties from prey entering them.

7) A COMPLETE census carried out every 1-5 years on the population of Tigers (wild cats), Elephants,  Rhinoceros (if in these areas although rare)  within these residential areas.

8) A COMPLETE BAN ON ALL ILLEGAL LOGGING AND FOREST DESTRUCTION WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT.

9) RAPID PESPONSE TEAM FOR ALL WILD ANIMALS THAT ARE IN DANGER WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT

POACHING OF ELEPHANTS AND WILD CATS & RHINOCEROS IN INDIA

Poaching of Elephants and wild Cats for animal parts is now growing again in India, the Indian government this month made a press statment on what the best option to be if they catch a poacher and that was "to shoot dead on site" if any poacher is caught in action. That we fully support and expect it to be up-held.

Poaching has been on the increase in India and most parts of Africa since 2005-2011 due to the demand of Ivory and animal body parts for the trade in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Organised gangs from China, Vietname, Singapore, and Sudan are mostly to blame, some Indian nationals have also been caught poaching which is shocking.

Poaching is rising all over Asia and the African nations with the White Rhinoceros being hunted now at 2-3 a day. The Indian Rhinoceros, there are about 2,600 Indian Rhinoceros left in the wild although there was less than 200 in the early 20th century. (As reporterd by the RRC)

In 1972 the first Indian female president declared war not just on the "trophy hunters" but also the poacher too. Operation Tiger Rescue was launched  just for the Tiger (mainly Bengal) that is common to India. The whole operation was a complete success and the Tigers where brought back from extinction to every-ones relief.

There has been recorded the loss of over 121 elephants due to poaching in a period of four years from 2008 to 2011. During this same period, records of 781 kg of ivory, 69 tusks, 31 cut pieces of ivory, 99 pieces of ivory carvings and 75 ivory bangles that have been seized from across the Indian country. From 2008 to 2011, a further 50 wild elephants died in road and train accidents and a shocking 111 elephants died from electrocution. But poaching remains the major cause of death for wild elephants.

Of the 2,084 Indian rhinos remaining today, 96 per cent are found in three national parks of Assam, with the vast majority living in Kaziranga National Park. In particular, the Foundation hopes to ensure the protection of the Greater One Horned Rhino as this Kaziranga National Park harbours about 75% of the total population of its kind in the wild. In 2000, the park almost doubled in size to 830 square kilometres providing more protection for rare species. However, one side of the park is relatively unguarded. The 50 kilometre long Brahmaputra River stretches east to west across the northern boundary of the park, and provides an easy entry point for poachers.

WHAT WE WANT THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT AND MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS TO DO?

1) To keep to the shoot to kill on site of any poacher/s found.

2) All Chinese, Vietnamese, Sudanese, and Singapore nationals that come in to the country to seek asylum or over stay their visas to be kicked out of the country immediately.

3) Any poacher caught with illegal animal parts from that of the one horned Indian Rhinoceros, Elephant, and (Any of the wild Cat species) to be jailed and NOT bailed and given the HIGHEST jail term there is. Once their term is over they are to be kicked out of the country and banned from entry again.

4) Poachers that are caught are to also have some form of identification chip or tattoo placed on them, pictures and all facial and optic recognition taken so there is NO way they can try to re-enter India again.

5) Government funding of the national parks that hold the one horned Indian Rhinoceros so all areas that are un-secure for poachers to gain entry to are closed off - fundraising from the public MUST be met with help to from the government.

6) More support for conservation teams that are helping to secure the natural wildlife in the most hard hit zones from government funding and policing too.
