Millennials: It's Time to Take Control of Your Future

Millennials: It's Time to Take Control of Your Future

The Issue

There comes a time when each and every generation becomes responsible for its present and future well-being and can no longer hold those who come before them responsible for their current state of affairs, whether it be for better or worse. Coinciding with this principle, the desires, opinions and worldviews of those who come before must not impede the progress and self-determination of those who will lead our generation into the future. History has been witness to a declining and increasingly dysfunctional society in which a generation of citizens demand more and more from their government while simultaneously expecting to contribute less and less. This gross discrepancy has been allowed to propagate for decades and now threatens to unravel every aspect of our society that has true value. In order to right the wrongs that exist within our great nation, we as a new generation must arise and allow our collective economic, political and social will to be heard in resounding unison and begin to steer our future toward a brighter one than the one that awaits us without action.

We, the generation of American Millennials, begin the great process of renewal and prosperity today and in doing so, address the following issues as ones that must be acted upon:

* The institution of a clear and permanent network neutrality policy that advocates no restrictions by Internet service providers and/or government on content, sites, platforms, the types of equipment that may be attached, and the modes of communication.

* The elimination of all federal subsidies provided to companies in non-renewable energy sectors, with said subsidies being diverted to renewable, non-nuclear energy sectors for a period of no less than ten years.

* The complete reformation of Social Security (OASDI) from an increasingly burdening financial institution to a solvent, secure system, which includes the elimination of the Social Security Wage Base, ensuring that each American pays an equal percentage in FICA or SECA tax.

* The increase of the marginal tax rate on the highest tax bracket from 35% to 70% and on the second highest tax bracket from 33% to 38%.

* The implementation of an electronic voting system that uses paper ballots with ballot questions randomly sorted, along with a detachable selection ballot that is then scanned into a computer and associated with an encrypted bar code and verification code, providing open and transparent verification of election results while simultaneously eliminating fraud.

* The federal reclassification of cannabis from a Schedule I substance in the Controlled Substances Act to a legal, taxable commodity that can be possessed by any individual over eighteen years of age.

* The reduction of the budget of the Department of Defense by 35% over a period of ten years.

* The development of a national high-speed rail system over the next ten years that will create a foundation for further development by private industry.

* A renewed pledge to NASA and space exploration by tripling the budget of NASA and establishing a concrete national plan for lunar and martian colonization within twenty years.

* A renewed pledge to our educational system by increasing federal K-12 funding by 50% over the next five years.
