How We Won

Jul 07, 2011

In a matter of hours, Microsoft decided on Thursday to remove its online store from the “Christian Values Network” after more than 500 people signed Stuart Wilber’s Change.org petition asking the software company to stop allowing the funding of anti-gay groups like Focus on the Family and “hate groups” identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center, including the Family Research Council.

“Microsoft's swift reaction to my Change.org petition demonstrates their strong support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities,” said Wilber, a Microsoft customer and resident of Seattle. “Microsoft has a long tradition of being supportive of our community. I assumed they would be just as upset as I was that their brand was being used by anti-gay hate groups to raise money. I’m glad I was right.”

Microsoft is a leader in the corporate world for their internal and external policies to both protect their LGBT employees, and to advocate for better laws to protect all LGBT people under the law. Recently, Microsoft publicly endorsed the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA), a law that would allow gays and lesbians to sponsor their loved ones for American citizenship, just like married heterosexual couples. During Washington's Referendum 71 campaign, Microsoft contributed $100,000 to help protect the right of lesbian and gay families to a domestic partnership.

Hopefully, the more than 600 companies who are still being used by the Christian Values Network to raise money for known hate groups will follow Microsoft's lead and quickly insist their store is removed from the Christian Values Network.

Did you know that dozens of major brands, including Target, Macy’s, Delta, Netflix, Apple, Microsoft, Dell, and even Sesame Street are supporting known hate groups through the link referral service know as the Christian Values Network (CVN)?

According to CVN, there are more than 170,000 charities that benefit from the CVN’s service by receiving donations through purchases made through the site. For example, someone could buy airline tickets from Delta, and the airline would make a donation to the charity of the customer’s choice through CVN.

Unfortunately, there are several organizations included on CVN’s service that support discrimination. In addition to Focus on the Family's anti-gay agenda, the Southern Poverty Law Center has declared organizations like the Family Research Council and Summit Ministries as known “hate groups,” for their blatant and repeated homophobic lies about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. These organizations receive donations through CVN when customers buy products through CVN stores. Corporations that are typically strong on LGBT rights like Microsoft, Apple, Macy’s and others, are allowing their brands to be used to raise money for organizations whose major focus of work is hurting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

This has to stop. Call on Microsoft to insist CVN stop using their brand to raise money for hate.

Microsoft: Stop raising money for anti-gay hate groups like "Focus on the Family"

Greetings,

I am shocked and saddened to see that Microsoft is funding discrimination against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community through your participation in the Christian Values Network.

The Christian Values Network allows shoppers to purchase from companies like yours, while supporting charities they like. There are more than 170,000 charities for customers to choose from, most of which are very worthy of your support.

Unfortunately, there are several organizations included on CVN’s service that support discrimination. In addition to Focus on the Family's anti-gay agenda, the Southern Poverty Law Center has declared organizations like the Family Research Council and Summit Ministries as known “hate groups,” for their blatant and repeated homophobic lies about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. These organizations receive donations through CVN when customers buy products through CVN stores.

By allowing your brand to be used to raise money for good charities, you are also allowing your brand to be used to raise money for hate groups. Please ask the Christian Values Network to remove your brand from any stores which support these and any other hate groups which may be hosted on the site.

You have a strong history of supporting the LGBT community and should not tarnish your brand’s good reputation now by allowing your products to be used to raise money to fund these homophobic organizations.

Thank you.
