Stop A&B and the ILWU Union from causing harmful dirty air in Kihei!

The Issue

We live in the beginning of Kihei. We have a highway called Mokulele Highway! This highway is filled with dirt and Sugar Cane fields. Day and night the workers are causing huge dirt clouds and funnels which blow right into Kihei! My son as well as others that have asthma are directly affected by this! There is no need for them to cause this when all they have to do is use dust crop fences to secure the fields avoid this from happening. It is so bad it is causing sickness! People can't breathe and we have to keep our air conditioner's on to avoid breathing all this dirt and chemicals. Plus it causes us to have to pay higher electric to breathe! They burn PVC pipes in these fields while burning cane which is bad enough. Please help stop the assault on Kihei and help us have cleaner air.

UPDATE: My husband just got off the phone with the field operations manager, who was very polite and was willing to listen. My husband wanted to know why no dust crop fences were put up. He said it wouldn't matter because it would go right over the fence anyway. My husband disagreed because he had been caught in it and told him it travels low, and what about the people on mopeds, motorcycles, and bicycles? It is not safe to travel on that road. The manager in turn talked about the old Wili Wili trees that HC&S planted that used to run along Mokulele Highway. He suggested these trees again because they are taller than the fences and they worked. So he is going to talk to his higher up about installing either fences or hedges or Wili Wili trees again.  So this is a start to see if some action will be taken. We shall see! But please anyone sign this petition to help them move faster!

NEW UPDATE! 8/3/12 My husband posted this on facebook today:

Today I thought I would risk Mokulule and take the ride I have been taking for the last few years. Boy was that a mistake! I got a little over half way and my throat and eyes started to burn from all the dirt and dust I was inhailing thanks to good ole HC&S! Then the headache immedialtely took over. I decided to turn around and I had about 5-6 miles back to Kihei and I knw it would really suck! I am so disappointed that I lost the ability to take this ride due to lack of environmental protection on HC&S's part! What a shame they cannot just re-plant the Wili Wili trees or use dust crop fences along Mokulule Highway to curb some of the dust! As of now in my opinion it is no longer safe for pedestrians traveling to or from Kihei to Kahululi unless they are in a car with the windows up! I hate to think how the moped drivers and motorcycles are handling this! Again thanks HC&S for being such awesome environmentalist and caring so much about the people of Maui! Also thank you for burning cane while we sleep so we wake up to that great smell filling our house at 6 am! Love it, you guys rock!
