Save the French Program

The Issue

To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.

When I am sitting in English class I look at our grammar and have trouble with grasping our language. Being it is my first language I should think in English all the time--but I don't. I may not be completely fluent in French but I can honestly say I feel more comfortable talking, reading, and writing in French. Not because I studied it more or because I worked hard in that class. When I first joined the class I hated it, I failed every test, I gave up before I even gave it a chance. After a year I just picked up on it for what little attention I paid in class. Soon I am messaging my pen pals in France in French, emailing English teachers who live in France, planning trips to France. Hell, my phone and computer are set in French. It's just more natural for me as a language and to see it cut, to see that window close for all the students in our school district is beyond saddening. I wouldn't have such a miserable time watching it go if French was being replaced with another language opportunity but it's not. Only Spanish will be offered from 8th grade and up. We should be pushing languages from a younger age-not restarting foreign languages to only Spanish. Keep as many windows open as possible. Keep French a language in the Marlboro Central School District.

I am taking both French and Spanish and learning American Sign Language from books and websites. I am currently working on being an exchange student in Spain (fingers crossed) and in France as well. I would like the same language opportunities for not only my younger brother but everybody in the district.
