Major Civil Rights Organization Leader Suspends Activist For His Advocacy On AIDS

The Issue

The issue of HIV/AIDS and its impact in the African-American community is large. Existing epidemiological data clearly support the need for targeted HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care especially in the African-American community. While African-Americans account for approximately 12% of the nation's total population, 45% of that population accounts for new HIV infections and nearly 50% of all new AIDS cases. African-Americans women account for 61% of new HIV infections and 66% of new AIDS cases among all women. Black teens, ages 13-19, approximately 15% of the nation's total teen population account for 68% of new AIDS cases among teens of all racial and ethnic groups.
