Long Beach Animals Need Shelter

The Issue

In March of 2011 the City of Long Beach, NY lost their contract with a local shelter to house animals picked up by Long Beach Animal Control. The animals no longer have anywhere to go. This means lost pets have no way of reuniting with their owners and a higher rate of euthanasia for the city's animals. City of Long Beach, has yet to acknowledge this or make an effort to reopen its shelter or to contract with a no kill shelter to protect and save the stray animals in our community. Very poorly planned was the stipulation in their contract with a local shelter that only gave a 30 day grace period upon which to terminate on either side.

Now the animals of Long Beach are subject to euthanasia without a chance at life or finding their way home. This is unacceptable,  unethical and according to the NYS Agriculture and Market Laws, illegal as Each town, city & village in which licenses are issued shall "establish and maintain a pound or shelter for dogs" (See Article 6 of the Agriculture & Market Laws in NY State sec. 114)

This is intolerable and anyone who has compassion for animals should care about this issue and take action to resolve this unjust and cruel situation. The citizens of Long Beach and animal lovers are speaking out to initiate change and a resolution for these animals IMMEDIATELY.

Pet owners should be aware and outraged that their pets, if lost, will receive the same treatment as every other animal, which in a case where no shelter exists to house them is likely euthanasia.
