Livestock Produces More Global Greenhouse Gases Than Our Global Transportation System
Livestock Produces More Global Greenhouse Gases Than Our Global Transportation System
The Issue
Livestock and factory farming of animals play a major role on global warming. Livestock and factory farming of animals negatively impact the world's water, land and biodiversity resources thus seriously compromising our global environment.
Directly or indirectly--from the start to the finish of this agricultural process of livestock and factory farming--through grazing and feed-crop production, livestock occupies almost 30% of the ice-free terrestrial surface of the Earth. Moreover livestock and factory farming are a staggering source of land based pollution, emitting nutrients and organic matter, pathogens and drug residues into rivers, lakes, and coastal waters.
Animals and their wastes emit gasses which significantly contribute to climate change, as do land-use changes caused by the demand for feed-grains and grazing land--the deforestation of the Amazon Rain Forest in Brazil to cultivate soy is but one example. Livestock and factory farming continuously reshape entire landscapes especially when the demands for more pastures and feed-crop production increase consequently reducing the Earth's natural habitats.
Please sign this petition below urging your elected politicians to:
1. Review the scientific research on livestock and factory farming of animals
2. Acknowledge and accept that 18% of global warming is due to livestock and factory farming of animals
3. Acknowledge and accept that 13% of all global greenhouse emissions are produced by the transport of livestock and factory farmed animals (from the start to the finish of the agricultural process)
4. Pledge to educate Americans and other concerned citizens of the world of this hidden yet serious global threat
5. Work on legislation which would make the meat and dairy industries more financially accountable for the harm which they have done to animals, our environment, and the consumer.
Ignoring this serious situation will not make it go away. In fact, it will only increase its severity. We have an obligation to future generations of animals and humans alike to reverse this situation.
