Liberation of toiling children of the world
The Issue
*Childrenize the worldA confluence of Artists, sculptors, musicians, dramatists, dancers, film makers, photographersto create a **Childom * Childrenize to create conditions of freedom for all children** Childom a place where children are free Dear Artist friend 246 Million Children in the world are toiling to produce wealth, food and resources to sustain essentially an adult world. Out of this ever growing global working children 127million live in India and the rest in Asia, Africa and Latin America. There is a strong need to Childrenize the world. In the month of March 2006 15 former child laborers undertook a History expedition cycling 4040kms covering all the 27 Districts of Karnataka, a southern state of India, recorded 25 000 pictures, and logged 32 hours of film footage. A painful realization dawned that this society lives and thrives on the labour of children intensively and extensively! Children are involved in production, marketing and distribution processes of all products that we use day to day From the turmeric and Chilies in the curries, to the resins in your cake and Kesari bath, The banana you love to eat and the milk in your ice cream treatThe cotton in your pillow and the silk in your sariThe sugar in your tea and the coffee in your coffee, The mutton that you relish and the fish fry for which you cryThe bricks in your building, and the grinding stone for your masalaThe all utility steel which makes spoons and knives aero planes and cars, houses and skyscrapers. Manganese and iron ore is dug up by six year old children in Sandur and HospetThe gods and goddesses you worship to the puffed rice you offer as charity The potato finger chips and aloo gobi you love to the drum sticks in your sambarThe great Indian tabla which Zakir Hussain plays, to the stone imitations at Halebid. To provide a thatch over your head is the deft hand of a weaving childThe roses in for the valentines’ day to the Jasmine delightChildren everywhere are not playing not enjoying but toiling to feed a fat greedy society.40% of the work force are children producing 40% of the gross national product. In Hampi we saw in an acre of sugarcane fields 35 children under the age of 12 weeding In a big banana plantation where we encountered 22 children harvesting Banana bunches each weighing 20 to 25 kilos on their tiny heads. The youngest worker was 6years old. We love to eat bananas, but behind every banana that we peel to eat is the toiling tiny hand of a child. kids say baalle hannu thinnuvaga nammanu mareyabeedi Don’t forget us when you peel a banana Dry grapes making is a big job in Bijapur, tonnes and tonnes of the famous Bijapur Under huge Big Black tents of exploitation are again small children separating and grading the resins for a rupee a kilo. Similarly in Bangalore rural district we saw The White Ghost tents Tonnes of roses that comes to Bangalore flower market and exported to the world. Roses that express love and friendship are plucked and packed kids. Later on Mahathma Gandhi road the main street of Bangalore they are sold by another group of children. Bricks roads are ideas of men and the hands of children everywhere. So much so the houses and cities we live in the roads that rolls on are the labour of children. Here is my song Brick by brick the brick boy, Brick by brick the brick boy He raises the mall, and the wall is tall, and from there he shall slip and fallThe child is a doll very very small, I stand up and call but the wall is high and tallBrick by brick the brick boy, brick by brick the brick boy Do you know why they employ a child?Because he is mild, not at all wild, He’ll work lot more and take much less.He is nimble and fast, beat him, and spank him He’ll not organize and demandAnd so I tell you Children of the world answer this call Brick by brick we must build our own mall Strong, beautiful, tall, we can dance, dream, learn everything and all!Brick by brick dance and dream, brick by brick learn everything We cannot deny the children of the world their childhood So this world has to be changed! Manifesto of the Artists United.
When social values and anarchy prevailed in a decadent society, there was chaos and moral degradation Moses came down from the mountain With the Ten Commandments, sculpted on stone showing the path to life, that even today holds much truth.
Here in the 21st century in the covenant of the Artist’s hearts I lay the purpose and philosophy of art.
Ten Commandments of Art
I Art is Humanity.
Art has to be in the service of Humans and nature. By its expressions it humanizes the world.
II Art Unites
It emphasizes togetherness and negates individualism. It destroys all walls and artificial materialistic barriers it raises the collective consciousness and knits together the human fabric.
III Art is heart.
Art is the heart throb of the human soul, pulsating and keeping alive the cultural continuity of civilizations.
IV Art is Beauty.
Art is beauty, as “ Man creates in accordance with the laws of beauty”. The state of beauty has to be established by creating conditions, which will nourish it’s flourishing. It will espouse holistic human values of Love, sharing, Caring, peaceful coexistence, Respect nature.
V Art is joy.
Art celebrates life. It does not discriminate humanity on the state of its being, color, beliefs and place of occurrence It beholds the goodness of the humans and promotes bondage.
VI Art is power
Art is the embodiment of the creative power of the artist reflecting social life and therefore it empowers and emboldens those who behold it.
VII Art is united
Art is the repository of the emotive folk spirit of civilization
VIII Art is childhood eternal
Art is the epitome of childhood. It is high fantasy, unadulterated futuristic. It is born from the womb of the child’s imagination seeking out the pure and innocence of life. It is playful by nature. It heralds the freedom of children from toil. Art is child liberator.
IX Art is revolutionary.
Art questions hitherto all accepted truths with such fundamental notions. It critically questions the contradictions in society; it nurtures enthusiasm and motivates change. Hence art will negate all that is ugly to humanity, poverty, hunger, exploitation of man-by-man, war, violence, greed, hatred and jealousy, physical and mental slavery.
X Art is prophetic
Art is prophetic and the artist the prophet. It brings into this world all that is new and noble.
