Here are the statistics on the hate crimes and how many LGBT's there are. It may not seem like a big deal to congress but it's a big deal to me.
LGBT don't ignore us anymore
Dear Decision Maker,
The US census bureau reports that approximately 1% of the population is LGBT. However this is an estimate based upon same sex marriages and civil unions, which does not count singles or those who are too afraid to report that they a gay. In a social diversity class I attended, we were told a more accurate estimate was that 1 in 10 people were either gay, bisexual, or were a repressed homosexual/bisexual (meaning they had feelings for the same sex but were too afraid of the adverse effects to act upon such feelings) what a shame! 1 in 10 people and were are treated like were little green men from another planet!
Dr. Herek's national survey of lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults. It is the first study to document the extent of hate crime victimization in a nationally representative sample of sexual minority adults.
Also reported here are data from the first large-scale study of the psychological impact of hate crimes based on sexual orientation. These data show that lesbian and gay hate crime survivors manifested more symptoms of psychological distress than lesbian and gay survivors of "random" assaults in the same time period. Hate crimes should be punishable by law and enforced.
So with all of this going on why can't we just legalize gay, lesbian and bisexual marriages and be happy?
