Why This Is Important

LETS STOP POLICE BRUTALITY AGAINST STUDENTS, before it leads to tragic events.Students at the University of Puerto Rico have been conducting protests against an $800 stabilization-fee implemented by the UPR Administration and the Puerto Rican government. This fee originated in the lack of administrative efficiency and misuse of those public funds originally destined to provide the UPR with sufficient resources to function appropriately. For an average student, this $800 fee represents a doubling in tuition costs and will leave 10,000 students out of the UPR 60,000+ student body. The student movement has identified many alternative sources of funding as well as other solutions that would lead to the elimination of the $800 fee and allow ALL students to return to classes this Winter semester. The response of the Government and the University Administration has been that of repression, student persecution, and violence. In the past week, more than a 100 students have been arrested illegally just because they were protesting peacefully. The use of unnecessary force by the police and riot squads has been predominant. The orders to use police force against the student demonstrators have been directly issued and supported by Gov. Luis Fortuño, the governor of Puerto Rico. Let Gov. Fortuño know that his tactics are not only wrong, but illegal and that they represent a human rights violation! RESTORE PEACE TO THE UNIVERISTY OF PUERTO RICO NOW.

Students at the University of Puerto Rico have been conducting protests against an $800 stabilization-fee implemented by the UPR Administration and the Puerto Rican government. This fee arises from the lack of administrative efficiency and misuse of public funds to provide the UPR with sufficient funds for its appropriate function. This $800 fee represents a doubling of tuition costs for an average student and will leave 10,000 students out of the 60,000+ students that form part of the UPR. The student movement has identified many sources of funding as well as other solutions, to eliminate the $800 fee and allow ALL student to return in this Winter semester. The response of the Government and the University Administration has been of repression, student persecution and violence. Over 100 students have been ilegally arrested in the last week for peacefully protesting and the use of unnecessary force by the police and riot squad has been predominant. These orders to use Police force have been directly issued and supported by Gov. Luis Fortuño, the governor of Puerto Rico. Let Gov. Fortuño know that his tactics are not only wrong, but illegal and are a violation of human rights! RESTORE PEACE TO THE UNIVERISTY OF PUERTO RICO NOW.
