How We Won

Mar 08, 2011

Late on the night of March 8, 2011, school board members in Corpus Christi, Texas reversed their decision to deny high school senior Bianca "Nikki" Peet's request to start a Gay-Straight Alliance at her school. Nikki Peet can now start a GSA and meet on campus. The decision came after more than 55,000 Change.org members signed a petition in support of Peet, which was delivered by hand to the school at an all-day rally held on March 4 outside Flour Bluff High School.

The school's discriminatory decision to block a GSA had been threatened with litigation by American Civil Liberties Union and the Anti- Defamation League, and had become a national phenomenon due to the help of GetEQUAL TX, Equality Texas and students from the GSA at Texas A&M.

The principal of Flour Bluff High School, a public high school in Corpus Christi, Texas, has repeatedly rejected a student's application for a Gay-Straight Alliance on campus. Not only is this homophobic, it breaks federal anti-discrimination laws.

Under the Equal Access Act, federally-funded secondary schools must provide equal access to extracurricular clubs. The act also grants equal access on school grounds and inside school publications to student groups. This includes Gay-Straight Alliances on campus.

Please sign the petition below to urge school officials to approve Flour Bluff High School senior Bianca "Nikki" Peet's application to start a Gay-Straight Alliance on campus and create a safe spaces for all students.

Please Approve the Flour Bluff High School GSA Application

Greetings,

I am writing you today to ask you to approve the request to start a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) by Flour Bluff High School senior Bianca "Nikki" Peet.

By not allowing equal access to all student clubs on campus as outlined in the Equal Access Act of 1984, you are sending a message that hate and intolerance are acceptable and that all students are not equal or safe at Flour Bluff High School.

I urge you today to stand up against intolerance and hate and help students like Bianca "Nikki" Peet create safe spaces for all students - reflecting the mission statement of the Flour Bluff Independent School District.

Students leaders such as Bianca "Nikki" Peet should be commended for standing up for equal access for all students at Flour Bluff High School as an example of a true community leader.

I request that you address these concerns on or before Monday, February 28, 2011.

Thank you,
