Freedom of Choice

Dear Representative

The use of drugs is a personal choice and should be recognized our right to liberty and pursuit of happiness as guaranteed to us by our Constitution. As long as the individual is not harming others in their actions or interfering with the rights of others they are free to do whatever they feel. Besides unjustly infringing on our rights with your so called War On Drugs you are wasting alot of tax money and overlooking alot of revenue opportunities with the taxes you could make off of it just like you do for alcohol and tobbacco. I've heard every chief complaint from anti-drugs groups and I could respond to anyone of them on why it's only fair to allow adults the freedom to use drugs if they choose. For example 1) If drugs were legalized more kids would get hold to them.  My response is there is no evidence of that whatsoever and surveys conducted show just the opposite. In the U.S. where drug use is strictly forbidden 30% of 10th graders have tried drugs, in Canada where drug use is illegal but not as strictly enforced 29% of 10th graders have used, and in the Netherlands where the sale of drugs to adults is ok 28% of 10th graders have used. The fact is it is easier to get illegal drugs than regulated for adult use like alcohol and tobbacco because on the street they don't ask for id. 2)If drugs were legalized more crimes would occur. My response, look at all the crime the War on Drug is causing. The same thing happened in the 20's with prohibition and the crime rates went down when prohibition ended. Yes some people may commit crime but some people are just naturally trouble makers. You should only punish a drug user if they actually commit a crime not because you are afraid they will commit a crime. I could go on with examples forever, but I think you see where I'm going. The point is it is an adults choice to use drugs and it is no one else's place to interfere with that right, and they shouldn't be punished unless they actually commit a crime.
