Keep BP OFF OF Libya's Shores DRILLING=SPILLING

The Issue

We the undersigned do humbly request that you keep BP from drilling in Libya.  What they have done to the Gulf is criminal. The entire ecosystem in that region, and as far as we know three other states is destroyed and dying by the thousands.  They may even be more people and lands affected we will have to wait and see.   They have proved themselves unsafe in preventing oil-spills and ineffective as far as cleaning them, we beseech you on behalf of this planet to please do what it takes to stop this.  Even if it means charging them with criminal charges and seizing the company, why this hasn't been done yet is beyond me.

Libya is comprised mostly of the Libyan Desert, which covers 1,100,000 square kilometers (425,000 square miles) and receives virtually no rainfall.  The only habitable land in Libya is the coastal region (see the map below).

Because of the geography of Libya, if an oil spill such as the one in the Gulf of Mexico were to occur a large portion of the coast could be rendered uninhabitable.  The Libyans in that region would, more or less, be left to die.  Since the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, Libyans have become worried about the offshore oil exploration, and the possibility of a large spill.  Additionally, the water in Libya is generally gathered from artesian springs and wells, so any disaster on the coast or inland near a spring could drastically affect the quality of groundwater, even to the point of making it poisonous.

If an oil spill were to occur, there would be two large obstacles blocking the road to recovery: (1) Libya has "rocky" relations with most of the industrialized world, and (2) freedom of speech and press in Libya are restricted, so BP (or another company) wouldn't be under public pressure to fix the problem.

We beg you to do your jobs and help protect this earth and the people within it.  If they are set loose down there don't dout in four or five years when the pipes get old and rusty from them not taking care of them or the machines get old and slapped together from cheap repairs that the pipe will  bust.  Possibly killing more people whom just need to work to live and destorying another piece of the ocean.

Kiona TatePetition StarterI personally for a long time bought into I am just one, I can't do anything to change the world.. Than one day I had a great awakening and realized that if everyone felt that way nothing would get done, there would have been no Martian Luther King JR, Mother Teresa, Ghuandi, or any of the other great people that have made great change. So even though I know I will never be a great leader nor do I want to I decided to do any and all I can to help to save the planet.
