Keep Mom Owned Business in Business!

The Issue

In February of 2011, The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) will go into effect.  It will require all businesses that sell products to children to have their finished products tested by a 3rd party.  Before February 2011, businesses could buy materials that were tested for lead and phthalates.  The new rules require completed products to be tested again - adding costs and fees that will put many Mom Owned Business out of business.

This includes any product that is "intended primarily" for a child 12 years of age or younger.  Toys, clothes, furniture, books, jewelry, blankets, games, CDs/DVDs, strollers, and footwear are included.  Child care articles are also included - bibs, child placemats, child utensils, bottles, cribs, booster seas, pacifiers and teethers.

We are moms and we want safe products for our babies and children.  However, as business owners to, we believe the new rules will put many of us out of business.

We ask the Consumer Product Safety Commission to delay instituting these new rules on businesses and allow the previous rules stand (allowing materials to be tested rather than the finished product).
