Keep Face-to-Face Visitation at D. C. Jail

Keep Face-to-Face Visitation at D. C. Jail
The Issue
The District of Columbia gave up its rights to its inmates to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Many of the inmates being held at the D. C. Jail are awaiting or have been sentenced and will be shipped to an unknown designation somewhere in the United States. Many families do not have the resources to visit them out of state and sometimes not to even communicate with their loved ones by telephone. Now the Department of Corrections is trying to limit contact with jailed prisoners. The families and friends only contact with their loved ones at the jail will be through a video monitor. Millions of dollars have been appropriated for this injustice while the inmates at the jail need hygiene products, new mattresses, a library, environmental cleaning, and weekend staffing for visitation. The current visiting halls can be upgraded to facilitate visitation.
