Justice and Protection for Human Rights Victims

In December we wrote to you about the case of Martha Giraldo, whose father was killed by the U.S.-backed Colombian Army on March 11, 2006. People across the country watched a video produced by Witness for Peace in which Martha returns to the site of her father's murder to call for justice. The trial against a soldier indicted in the case began just ten days ago.
With a heavy heart I write to you, Friend, to tell you that Martha's uncle--a key witness in the case--was shot in the head on Sunday in an apparent attempt to disrupt the trial and scare the other witnesses, including Martha. He is in intensive care awaiting nerosurgery.
Yesterday we sat with Martha as she described the fear and anger she, her family and the other witnesses feel right now. We want you to be able to hear her too, so the WFP Colombia team recorded this short video.
Right now the lives of Martha, her family and the other witnesses in the case are on the line. They need your support. They simply ask for protection and justice in the cases of Martha's father and uncle. Please take one minute to send a letter to U.S. Ambassador William Brownfield, asking him to stand up for justice in this case.
You can also send Martha and her family a message of support, in English or Spanish. Martha and her mother cried when they read the messages many of you sent in December.
In solidarity,
