During Hurricane Irene 8/27/11 Greenville, North Carolina
One family decided to pack up and head to safety leaving there poor helpless dog to fend for herself. She was left outside chained to an igloo dog house in a pen. The neighbor knowing the family spotted the dog out in the backyard in extreme weather conditions. She went to check on the dog in disbelief to discover this dog was in immediate danger. A tree had fallen onto the pen crushing it. An electrical wire had also fallen close to the dog’s pen. Being 9 months pregnant she did all she could and took a picture of the dog and the living conditions. Posted the picture to the world on facebook, hoping someone could rescue the dog. Many of us, who saw the post, started making calls, re-sharing the page via facebook. Some advocates were calling the local AC and police. The Police Department assured us they would go rescue the dog. The Police did in fact go to the home where the dog was, 5 times before they removed the dog. The first 4 times they tried to convince us that the dog was not in danger after removing the tree and electrical wire, the dispatcher stated that the dog was fine and merely "liked" to sleep on top of its dog house. They also said the dog had food and water and shelter. Of course the dog had water; she was outside in the middle of a hurricane. The food was soggy and contaminated. The ground was full of puddles and the "shelter" had a hole in it causing the wind to push the rain in the hole. The dog was not able to sleep inside; the igloo was full of water. The only dry place for the dog to sit was on top of the igloo. The actions of this owner put a physical and mental strain on the dog. We all believed that the dog would not make it through a hurricane. After many calls and post to the City officials, the 5th visit from the AC, she was picked up and brought to a shelter. Place unknown at this time. City Officials are claiming she is safe, but they are the same people that said she was safe being outside chained in a pen in the middle of a hurricane. We are DEMANDING the dog NOT to be returned to the owners that left her behind, chained in a pen. We want Justice for Irene; we want the owner to be charged with the maximum penalty for their actions. The actions of the owners almost cost Irene’s life. Not to mention what she was experiencing mentally. We are the voice for animals that don’t have a voice, we have taken a stand, and we will not stop to the end. Owners of animals have to be accountable for their actions. We also are requesting the dog be placed with a reputable rescue. Irene deserves to in a place that can rehabilitate her. We have started a facebook page, where many of the same people that were on the thread of over 1,500 post have come together to demand Justice for Irene. Final Demand, Irene is not to be put to sleep, we want her to be rehabilitated and then move into a forever home.
