Justice for Hashim Idris

The Issue

On the afternoon of April 13, 2011, Hashim Idris (a Harari regional State Municipality worker) was shot in the head in broad daylight at Harar Faras Magala in front of a Police Station. He was shot with two Bullets to his head.

He was brought to Jugal Hospital and treated and later referred to Addis Ababa for further surgery. At 8:00 pm local time on April 15, 2011, Hashim Idris died in the hospital from the bullet wounds.

The funeral service of Hashim Idris was concluded the following day around 8:00 am local time in presence of huge crowds and mourners from all members of the community.

People expressed their heartfelt sorrow and sadness and anger and indignation openly. Notably, none of the Harari regional rulers (HNL and OPDO) issued any statements on this very tragic crime and murder.

According to media accounts, when people in the community went to demand justice the authorities allegedly used teargas to disperse the mourners instead of allowing them to express their concerns.

Some of the mourners were hurt and seriously injured in that attack.
