Recently I have become concerned over the criminalization effort against the most vulnerable in Iowa, the homeless. Research has shown that people experiencing homeless have endured an increasingly hostile environment. Many of the day to day activities, that most of us take for granted, have been restricted to people without shelter such as local ordinances that deem sitting on sidewalks or loitering to be infractions. Citizens of this state should be able to work towards getting out of this demeaning situation without the fear of being harassed or cited for being impoverished. I ask that you support the Homeless Person's Bill of Right and Acts of Living bill. In supporting this bill it guarantees the rights, privacy and property of homeless persons who are adequately safeguarded and protected under the laws of this state. It will guarantee that individuals and families experiencing homelessness are allowed to move freely in public spaces, including on public sidewalks, in public parks, on public transportation, and in public buildings without harassment or intimidation from law enforcement officers in the same manner as other persons. They will also have equal oppurtunities for employment, have personal information protected, have a reasonable expectation of privacy in his or her personal property, and receive equal treatment by state and municipal agencies.
