Drop bogus charge against mentally ill refugee Kosgar Lado

Drop bogus charge against mentally ill refugee Kosgar Lado

The Issue

Note: Please visit www.justiceforkosgar.org for updates, documents and information on helping the family.

Twenty-one-year-old Kosgar Lado is living a nightmare.

Kosgar, a Sudanese refugee who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, was charged with murder after falsely confessing during a high-pressure police interrogation. As he spent time jailed, including a month in isolation, his mental state deteriorated.

Ingham County (Mich.) Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III ultimately dropped the murder charge when it became clear that Kosgar was innocent, and another man is now charged. But Dunnings charged Kosgar with lying to police based on that false confession - and months later, Dunnings refuses to drop that felony charge.

Kosgar's horrific ordeal continues as he faces four years in prison on a charge that legal experts find unfathomable.

“To charge somebody who didn’t come forward of their own volition and had a false confession extracted is so far beyond the pale — it’s outrageous,” David Moran, director of the Michigan Innocence Clinic at the University of Michigan law school, said in an article in the Lansing State Journal: http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/article/20140129/NEWS01/301290045/Mentally-ill-Lansing-man-cleared-murder-still-faces-outrageous-lying-police-charge.

As citizens, we cannot stand by and let this injustice be committed by our public officials. Tell Prosecutor Dunnings that is it wrong to pursue this outrageous charge against Kosgar, and he should drop the charge immediately.
