The Indianapolis to Evansville, Indiana extension of Interstate I-69 has been controversial from its inception almost 30 years ago. Proponents wish to spend upwards of three billion taxpayer dollars to bring the highway through beautiful southern Indiana, destroying over 4000 thousand acres of farmland, pristine forest, unique geological features, and at least 400 homes, thus displacing more than 1000 people, some who have lived on their land for generations.
A route currently exists between the two cities along I-70 and US-41. With virtually no destruction of land and a cost of billions less, the existing route, after upgrades, would take approximately 10 minutes longer than the proposed new-terrain route to complete the Indy to Evansville trip.
In this fragile economy there is little reason to use money that could be used for schools or development of green transportation
Hoosiers opposed to new terrain I-69
Greetings,
We the undersigned citizens of the State of Indiana are opposed to the building of new terrain I-69 from Evansville to Indianapolis.
We believe the existing route I-70 and US-41 should be upgraded, spending billions fewer taxpayer dollars while providing an eminently serviceable route between the two destinations.
In addition to the upwards of three billion dollar price tag, the proposed new terrain highway will destroy over 4000 acres of prime farmland, pristine forest, unique Karst topography and wetlands, and displace over 1000 people from their homes, all for a gain of approximately 10 minutes over the 142 mile trip.
During this time in history, with our fragile economy and a diminishing supply of oil, we believe money spent on this new "super highway" is wasteful. It should be allocated to better the lives of all Hoosiers by investing in education, maintaining/upgrading existing roads and developing "green" jobs and "green" transportation systems for the future of the State of Indiana. Taxpayer dollars should not be wasted on this unnecessary, pork-barrel project.
