Hobart City Council - Fair Trade Certified Council

Hobart City Council - Fair Trade Certified Council
The Issue
We are asking the Hobart City Council to become a Fair trade Certified Council.
This would involve a series of commitments and regular progress assessment, including:
· Promoting fairtrade and serving Fairtrade Certified products within Council,
· Become part of a group consisting of community members who evaluate and record progress,
· Encouraging local businesses, cafes and tourist destinations to stock fairtrade products,
· Educating local enterprises such as schools, workplaces and churches to use Fairtrade Certified products, as well as local clubs and associations (eg. Fairtrade Certified cotton in sports uniforms),
· Attracting media coverage and support for the campaign.
Fairtrade is an alternative system of international trade which develops partnerships with producers in developing countries to ensure they are paid a fair price for their goods and guarantees a sustainable livelihood for farmers and their families.
By supporting fairtrade products, not only are we are sending manufacturers the message that child exploitation is not acceptable, but that we want to ensure a better deal for producers and workers disadvantaged through exploitative international trade practices.
