Beginning next season, NASCAR racecars will run off an ethanol-blend fuel the sports organization is touting as the next step in the "greening of the sport." But ethanol gas has a minimal eco-impact, while it's production damages waterways, air quality and wilidlife. Ethanol production has even been linked to the Gulf of Mexico "dead zone."

But the real kicker is that this "green" gas will be produced in two different facilities, and trucked to racetracks across the country.

This move is motivated by money, not eco-friendliness. It's time for NASCAR to stop greenwashing, and really go green.

Greetings,

You recently announced that NASCAR cars would begin using ethanol-blend fuel next year. While this is being touted as a green move, it actually raises some serious environmental concerns.

Ethanol factories have been found to wreak havoc on the ecosystem, and according to the National Wildlife Federation, the corn crop hurts sensitive wildlife areas. Plus, ethanol production has been linked to the Gulf of Mexico "dead zone."

In exchange for this devastation, ethanol-blend gasoline has scant positive impact on the environment. Between 2005 and 2009, corn ethanol blends in gasoline led to a reduction in overall oil consumption equal to a 1.1 mile-per-gallon increase in fleet-wide fuel economy--barely anything compared to the damage done in the process.

To really do go green, NASCAR should commit to NOT use corn ethanol fuel next season, and invest in truly eco-friendly alternatives on the racetrack.
