Help Stop The Corporate Takeover Of Our Democracy

Help Stop The Corporate Takeover Of Our Democracy

The Issue

Note: This is a two part action
---------------------------------------------------

From People For the American Way:

Today, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that Congress has no constitutional authority to regulate corporations' influence on elections. This extreme case of judicial activism flies in the face of the "judicial restraint" the conservative Supreme Court justices supposedly championed and overturns over 100 years of legal precedent.

PFAW has a rich history of defending Americans' free speech, but corporations are not people. They are not citizens. They do not have a right to vote and they can not be given unlimited power to influence elections. It's now up to us to stand in their way.

There is no quick fix. The Roberts Court's audacity must be met with bold action.

People For the American Way is launching a campaign to pass an amendment to the U.S. Constitution which would nullify the worst part of the Court's decision by granting Congress the authority to limit corporate influence in elections. This is not something that we take lightly. But the very foundation of our democracy could depend on our ability to overturn this decision.

Be among the first to join this national movement by signing the petition to congressional leaders now.

We support other legislative efforts in Congress to limit the impact of today's anti-democratic decision - some of which are being talked about by our allies already. But this decision is such a drastic departure from sound democratic principles that we now stand on the precipice, and more is needed.

Congress must move quickly to protect our democratic system and the voice of the people by passing this amendment. From there, we will take our campaign to the states to get the amendment ratified by two thirds of the state legislatures. As the consequences of this decision sink in, more and more Americans will be justifiably outraged. We can make this national movement to amend the Constitution a success -- with your help.

Please sign the petition now and enlist others you know for this incredibly important campaign to save democracy.

From CALPRIG:

If you think Ticketmaster is too powerful, imagine political attack ads funded directly by ExxonMobil or AIG.

Such a scenario used to be illegal. But today, the Supreme Court ruled to lift a 60-year-old ban that kept corporations from influencing federal elections.

Congress must act now to protect democracy: Call on Speaker Pelosi to fix this mess.

The tortured legal argument is this: We're impeding on corporations' rights by keeping them out of elections ... rights specifically granted to people.

A corporation is not a person with voting rights. Corporations are not your neighbors, cannot get married, cannot die, and are not a part of "We the People." Giving corporations the rights of people would fundamentally change our democracy.

Unless we stand up, the problem of corporate money in politics could go from bad to unimaginably worse.

Already, moneyed institutions have too much power over government. I shudder to think of a situation where someone like Goldman Sachs, ExxonMobil or Big Pharma has even more control.

Thankfully, some legislators are working to strengthen our campaign finance laws to prevent this. Rep. Chris Van Hollen (MD), Sen. Charles Schumer (NY), and the White House are working to pass a Legislative fix to the Supreme Court opinion.

But without Speaker Pelosi's support, we're dead in the water.

We need Congress to prevent a flashflood of corporate money into elections. The alternative is an undemocratic system in which large corporations have even more power to drown out the voices of regular voters.

Tell Speaker Pelosi to block corporate money in elections:
