Help to stop unnecessary deaths in Honduras´s capital city International Airport
The Issue
The current International Airport in Tegucigalpa, capital of Honduras is called Toncontín International Airport. If you search information about it, you will find that is the second most dangerous airport in the world. And if we talk about planes with more than 100 passengers, will be ranked number 1.
Just on February 14th, 2011, a day that is supposed to be shared with the loved ones, another airplane crashed while was attempting to land on Toncontin. The runway is just 2.2 km and the plane with 14 people on board crashed, killing all the passengers.
There is an option, the Airport located in Palmerola, 80km from Tegucigalpa. This airport has served for almost 30 years as a militar base from the U.S.A. Thanks to that, the Honduran government has never wanted to take action into claim their right to use Palmerola airport as a civil airport.
President Manuel Zelaya tried to make Palmerola a civil airport in 2008, after the TACA Flight 390 crashed in Toncontin and killed 5 people. That was one of the reasons why president Zelaya was ousted with the help of the U.S.A. embassy in Honduras. Ironically, Zelaya was kidnapped and the flight that took him to Costa Rica took off from Palmerola, under U.S. troops management.
This petition has 2 objectives: To prevent more deaths from innocent people which only option to flight is Toncontin Airport and to return Palmerola Airport to Honduras, as a sovereign state.
Palmerola was used by the U.S.A. government during the cold war in the 80´s, helping to fight against the wishes of all central american countries, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Because its strategical position, the U.S.A don´t want to give up or even to share Palmerola, going even against Honduran constitution, that states on its article 12 that "The State exercises sovereignty and jurisdiction over the airspace and in the sub-soil of the mainland and islands, territorial sea, contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone and continental land." .
It is shameful that people have to die or being in a high danger when fly just because the viable option to do it is on an Airport that is managed by another country and that do not let the rightful owner to use it.
Ask the honduran government and the U.S.A. State Department to let Honduras use Palmerola as a civil airport.
