U.N. Human Rights Council : Stop the Violent Police Crackdown of Peaceful Turkish Protesters

The Issue

Human Rights watch groups such as Amensity International report widespread human rights violations as a result of the use of excessive force by Turkish Police responding to the continued protests that began with a peaceful sit in protest in Gezi Park in Taksim, Istanbul. The group was protesting the current adminstration's intent to demolish the park and replace it with a shopping center . The excessive use of force on the part of Turkish Police has led to an escalation of protests and more violent response on the part of the the Turkish administration. We are urging The United Nations to act to help prevent further violence and mediate a peaceful resolution to these protests without further harm to public health, safety and the stability of the region. The latest response to The Soma mine disaster protestors is an indication that the handling of protests through force is only escalating violent confrontations that are opening the door to further human rights violations by law enforcement. Please act to curtail further harm to the people of the Turkish Republic.
