Help Rescue Illawarra's Beaches

Help Rescue Illawarra's Beaches
The issue
The uncontrolled spread of Human planted vegetation towards the shoreline on many of the Illawarra’s beaches is leading to the demise of our once pristine, wide and useful sandy beaches, and has destroyed the ecologically sensitive inter-tidal zone upon which many organisms, sea life and sea birds rely. It has curtailed Nipper, Surf Life Saving, Board Riding, Leisure and Tourism activities and has compromised Safety.
Petition - when you sign, a letter will also be sent to Council and the Member for Kiera
Beach Care Illawarra – The Peoples Voice, demands immediate action from Wollongong City Council to,
· Remove all vegetation from beach inter-tidal zones as per NSW Coastal Dune Management, page 44 p4.2.2 Position.
· Amend the Coastal Zone management Plan to emphasise proper Dune vegetation management in accordance with NSW State Government guidelines
· Revoke all Dune planting permits pending their review, and instruct permit holders to redirect their efforts elsewhere
· Replace all unsuitable plantings with suitable vegetation where applicable
· Legislate maximum height limits for vegetation within the vicinity of Surf Life Saving Facilities pursuant to appropriate Line-of-Sight policies and implement management programs accordingly
· Acknowledge the Tourism and intrinsic value placed on coastal vistas from public and private amenities (e.g. Lookouts, Seating, Car Parks, Homes, Short Term Accommodations and Caravan Parks), and establish pruning and revegetation programs that reinstate the value and attractiveness of these locations to tourism.
· Implement procedural practices to ensure that no single environmental interest or group is allowed to prevail at the expense of another
· Diminish the excessive interest being placed upon misleading oceanic water height predictions and redirect its efforts to addressing natural beach sand regeneration processes, before embarking upon costly measures that have proven to be ineffective at combating sand loss on beaches
