The story of “Lost Dogs” applies to almost every country in the world, from Russia to South Africa to Puerto Rico… to Turkey.
In addition to undocumented reports from animal welfare activists that 50 stray dogs were thrown from a bridge in Istanbul, we now have documented proof of abuse in yet another death camp posing as a shelter. In a CNN iReport we see undercover footage recorded at the Kadir Topbas Hasdal Municipal shelter in Istanbul. The scandal was originally uncovered by Let’s Adopt!, which places blame on the Mayor of Istanbul, Kadir Topbas. Let’s Adopt is pushing for a complete overhaul of the turkish shelter system.
We are asking you to please contact the major and demand the correct application of Turkish Animal Welfare Law 5199, which declares Turkey a no-kill nation for dogs.

Push Turkey to declare itself a no-kill nation for dogs
Greetings,
Dear Mr. Dogan,
We write to you to draw your attention to the inhumane treatment of dogs in Istanbul’s shelter system, where dogs are left to die agonizing deaths from poison, abuse, disease and malnourishment.
We are impressed that Turkey already has laws in place that make it a No-Kill country. This is more advanced than many other countries, yet these laws are not applied. We ask you to take all necessary steps to ensure the correct application of Turkish Animal Welfare Law 5199. Additionally, we ask you to support a complete overhaul of the Turkish shelter system to ensure humane treatment of dogs, and to take the initiative in creating and supporting programs of education and spay/neuter – the most effective and humane way of controlling populations in the long term.
In a poll conducted with over 22,000 Turkish citizens, 99% of the people questioned expressed the single most important factor in casting a vote is the policy of a Party in relation to its treatment of animals. Now those citizens also have the support of the international community: Until such unspeakable cruelty against animals is addressed, we the international community vow to boycott all Turkish products and refuse to visit Turkey under the current conditions. We urge you to follow in the compassionate footsteps of CHP Parlamentarian Mehmet Sevigen and the major of Kas, Abdullah Gültekin, who saved the dogs of Kas from execution in 2009.
We hope you will take advantage of your very fortunate position, which empowers you to create a legacy of non-violence and compassion towards all of God’s creatures.
In kindness and hope,
[Your name]
