The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Oversight and Accountability Act will provide wide-ranging oversight over the operations, business and rate-making practices of the LIRR. LIRR customers deserve more transparency and accountability through a LIRR Oversight Bill.

If adopted, for the first time in LIRR’s history there would be meaningful oversight and accountability of the LIRR through an independent auditor rate review to ensure that rates are at their lowest level possible; consistent with sound fiscal operating practices. Moreover, LIRR customers deserve to have complaints reviewed by the Consumer Protection Division of the New York Department of State; to have the LIRR undergo comprehensive and regular management and operations audits to maximize the operational efficiencies through a review of internal procedures and policies with the first audit to be initiated immediately; and for the public to have an opportunity to be involved in the parameters of the audit by requiring public statement hearings to be held in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Lastly, the Bill will require major capital investments specifically for the Long Island region thus improving reliability, safety and productivity.

What is important to note is what this bill is NOT- It is not an attack on the hard working men and women who every day try their best to bring reliable, safe and friendly service to millions of riders on the LIRR.

The aforementioned LIRR Oversight and Accountability Act is long over-due and Long Islander’s deserve a change, now!
