<p><br />&gt; Letters to the Editor<br />&gt; Seniors deserve long-term choices<br />&gt; <br />&gt; With the celebration of our countrys independence almost upon us, we are reminded of what it means to be free. Too often we take for granted the freedoms we share, such as to come and go as we please, to live amongst those who make us happy, and to shape our future as we see fit. We have coined this, The American Dream. It provides us with the belief that our inalienable rights will always be there and our pursuit of happiness will never be taken away. This is the promise we have given to all.<br />&gt; <br />&gt; Sadly, this promise has not been kept for the millions of Americans who are being locked away in nursing homes. Despite having the ability to live in their community, their key is getting thrown away, their inalienable rights have been reduced to captivity and their pursuit of happiness is no longer theirs. Its a violation of the most basic civil rights.<br />&gt; <br />&gt; Health care reform is in full swing and the opportunity to address this issue is within grasp. We need support. President Barack Obama, Sen. Max Baucus and other members of Congress are choosing to continue funding nursing homes at a higher rate than long-term care services in the community, even though it costs less for someone to live in the community than in a nursing home. This institutional bias is keeping our brothers and sisters in segregated settings and upholding an inhumane precedence. Rather than adopting the language already established within the Community Choice Act, theyre saying living in your home is not important to health care. They are choosing to continue to throw away the key. We are saying the Community Choice Act is the key to health care reform.<br />&gt; Darren Larson, Missoula</p>
