Decriminalize and allow commercialization of third party reproduction.

Decriminalize and allow commercialization of third party reproduction.

The Issue

* Help start a charter challenge by signing to allow for payment to surrogates, eggs donors, sperm donors and surrogacy agencies.

Legislation in Canada currently prohibits payment to surrogate mothers, egg/sperm donors and surrogacy agencies.  It is LEGAL to be a surrogate, and donate eggs/sperm and receive reimburseable expenses but Assisted Human Reproduction Canada (AHRC) failed to define what is considered a reimburseable expense.

In 2012, the AHRC was scrapped and now it is a pivotal time to have your say as to whether you think third party reproduction should be commercialized in Canada.

Many countries/states currently have commercialization including the US, Israel and India.  Countries that have declared commercial surrogacy illegal usually cite ethical reasons for the decision. Some see paying for a surrogate mother as renting or buying the human body or a human life. Proponents of surrogacy arrangements maintain that the process is mutually beneficial, allowing the pregnant mother to earn money, while providing a child to people who may not otherwise be able to experience parenthood.

There is often a great financial, emotional and physical burden placed on surrogate mothers, donors and their families during this process.  Surrogate mothers have to take months of injections/medications and are often placed on bedrest due to complications/multiple births (twins).  Choosing to be a surrogate or donor should be a reproductive right and it helps to create families!  Outlawing payment exploits women and donors... it does not turn children into commodities.

At this time, the penalty for paying a surrogate mother/donor is a fine of up to $500,000 and 10 years in jail - just for trying to have a family!!

Please sign this petition if you feel strongly that third party reproduction should be commercialized in Canada.
