Ask for a warrant before disclosing private information to Indian police

The Issue

There have been many instances where Indian law enforcement agencies (various state police departments) have asked Google, Facebook, ISPs and other social media organizations for personally identifiable information about online users, due to political causes (when these users have posted materials criticizing or parodying political figures). Sometimes, the online companies have revealed the identities of these users, which have led to the harassment of users by police departments on very flimsy legal grounds, even though the courts later exonerated them because they were simply exercising their right to free speech without intent to defame anyone. We ask Google, Facebook, ISPs and other online companies to recognize the law of the land. India is a democratic republic where the rights of the citizens are protected by the constitution. There is simply no reason to disclose private information in almost all cases without a warrant. Respect Indian law, just as you respect the laws of your country of origin. Ask for a court warrant!
