The oil continues to gush from the Deepwater Horizon well in the Gulf.  We have a unique opportunity to use this disaster to engage the American people and reduce our dependency on oil.  Let's create something good from this horrible environmental catastrophe.

Join me in creating a petition to double the price of fuel in the United States and use the revenue to completely rebuild our transportation infrastructure. We can retrain laid off workers to build light rail and high speed rail. We can build mass transit systems instead of more highways, trucks and cars. We can build bicycle lanes and urban farms.

In case you're worried that doubling the price of fuel would cause an even deeper recession, look at Denmark.  They tax their gasoline so it costs $9/gallon. And from that they have built a strong economy and high quality of life for their citizens; people bike or take transit to work where many of them build wind turbines and other innovative alternative energy systems.

This is the future we need to build for the United States. Let's make sure the Obama Administration uses this moment of horror over spilled oil to create something lasting and good for this country.
