Go, Fish!—It's time to end overfishing

The Issue

Like you, I care deeply about the world around me and my impact on it. I care about the food I eat and where it comes from. And… like you, I’m pretty busy and wish it was all just a bit easier.

That's why I'm thrilled with our new campaign, Go, Fish! And I hope you will be, too.

Here's the deal: We overfish our oceans. That means that we are catching fish faster than they can reproduce and it puts populations of many species in peril. The impact of overfishing gets overwhelming pretty fast when you add the destruction of sensitive ocean habitats; needless catching of unwanted fish species, sea turtles, and marine mammals; a declining industry that feeds many local economies, among other things.

But it's not unsolvable. In fact, right now I'm more hopeful than ever because there is a solution. Whether you care because you treasure the ocean and its wildlife, or because you want your seafood to be sustainably caught or farmed, there is a way to say "Go, Fish!"

All we have to do to is end overfishing—and continue fishing at levels that our ocean can support. And right now, we actually have a chance to do so. Will you join us? Make history. Be one of the first to add your name to our petition to end overfishing right now. We need to show decision-makers at every level that we, as a country, demand an end to overfishing.

Our nation's fisheries are managed by a patchwork of eight regional fishery councils that oversee a complex seafood industry. What we're calling for is a long-term vision to guide how we relate to the ocean, with science-based practices that protect not only fish populations and local economies today, but also the entire ocean for generations to come. We've got a cadre of legislative leaders ready to help drive it forward. And we've got supporters like you to help us fight for a healthy ocean and help set the ocean policy agenda until we finally do stop overfishing. That's why I'm hopeful.

Together, we're calling for decision-makers, at every level, to do the right thing and help end overfishing and other harmful fishing practices. You can help by adding your voice to our call for a new kind of fishing for the future: one that delivers healthy ocean ecosystems, strong economies and vibrant coastal communities. You can help by saying "Go, Fish!"

It's time to give back to the ocean and make overfishing and other harmful practices a thing of the past.
