Go Beyond "Autism Awareness"

Go Beyond "Autism Awareness"
The Issue
"To promote autism awareness."
How often did you hear that phrase this past month of April? How often do you hear about "autism awareness" when the subject is autism charities, "walks/rides for autism," fundraisers of various types? On the one hand, it's good to know that people have heard about autism so that when I say "autistic" they don't think I mean "artistic." On the other hand, I'm not at all sure that making people "aware" about autism is really enough to lead to the kind of real changes that are needed.
Housing, in the community. Staff, trained to support adults on the spectrum who might be non-verbal and might have various medical issues.
Jobs. And job coaches.
Legislation and policies and funding so programs won't be talked about and partially implemented only to evaporate.
It's time to stop thinking that "raising autism awareness" counts as advocacy and activism for autism. It's time to start making real, concrete changes in services and supports for individuals on the autism spectrum of all ages, by letting public officials---local and beyond---know of the pressing need for these, and for sufficient resources.
Let's talk less about autism awareness. Let's not only talk about what needs to be done to support individuals on the autism spectrum to achieve their full potential, but let's go out there and make it happen.
