Support transgender youth by including them in Girl Scouts nationwide.

Support transgender youth by including them in Girl Scouts nationwide.
The Issue
"If a child identifies as a girl and the child's family presents her as a girl, Girl Scouts of Colorado welcomes her as a Girl Scout." That is the statement the Girl Scouts of Colorado released through the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
This was their response to a California teen -- a Girl Scout herself -- calling for a boycott of Girl Scout cookies. Her reasoning: the Girl Scouts were not being honest to their members by including transgender youth to join the organization. She called the practice unsafe, even dangerous.
The Girl Scouts of Colorado have shown gumption and bravery in their response to this call for boycott; it's time to take such a bold, open-minded, and forward-thinking policy even further; Girl Scouts of America should openly adopt such a viewpoint throughout the entire body of the organization, not merely in Colorado. The support of LGBT youth is as important now as it ever was -- with suicide still a very real concern, bullying still prominent, and discrimination that is often difficult to rally against due to policies fraught with loopholes through which transgender youth can be excluded from activities such as the Girl Scouts.
Sign your name to ask the Girl Scouts to support not just their Colorado youth, but all youth of America, by openly adopting a nation-wide policy to accept transgender youth.
