The Australian govt allows the export of millions of animals to face a brutal slaughter in the Middle East each year, but it doesn't stop there, it also allows ritual slaughter on Australian soil.

Footage and photographs obtained in Kuwait and Bahrain show terrified Australian sheep being manhandled, trussed, thrown, shoved into car boots and lying across the bodies of other bloodied dying sheep on roadsides, before having their throats cut whilst fully conscious. In one incident in Kuwait three Australian sheep were forced into a boot whilst another terrified animal purchased for sacrifice was transported to a private premises chained by his neck to the winch of a tow truck.
The Australian government claims to have the 'best animal welfare practices in the world'. Huge claim to make when it condones & allows barbaric ritual slaughter to be carried out on Australian soil.
The current Australian Standard provides that ALL animals to be slaughtered, must first be rendered insensible by effective stunning. HOWEVER, in deference to religious observances exemptions are provided for under the current national Standard to produce meat in accordance with Jewish or Islamic rights (religious slaughter). These exemptions allow abattoirs to provide meat to export and domestic markets SENSITIVE to religious requirements regarding the method by which the animals are slaughtered.
The Australian government says that given the long standing religious tradition of ritual slaughter it is important that all sides of the debate be consulted?? Interesting as those who have a voice, being the minority groups who insist on slaughtering 'ritual' style are consulted to ensure they are kept happy, however the victims of this obscene practice are not, as they have no voice.

AUSTRALIA NOW HAS A NEW AGRICULTURE MINISTER, SO IT IS TIME TO REALLY PUT THE PRESSURE ON.
State and Federal governments have been silent on the barbaric practice of ritual slaughter for far too long. There is NO reason or excuse for this kind of blatant cruelty. Ritual slaughter is barbarism; it has no place in our society and must be outlawed now!
According to the 'Federal' Government, the slaughter of fully conscious animals causes pain and distress, but does the Australian government oppose this hideously cruel slaughter ritual? NO, it condones and allows it. The Australian government allows several Australian slaughterhouses to slaughter terrified, conscious animals to satisfy the desires of a few who believe that animals that have not been stunned before death are more pure, but this is not representative of the whole religion of Islam. The Australian Agriculture Minister did not want a report which states that animals slaughtered without pre-stunning can suffer "panic and terror", to become public. It is recognised that stunning 'removes' the hazards of pain and distress from the last stage of the slaughter process, but does the Australian government care if animals suffer a slow, horrific death when their throats are hacked at while conscious? NO, instead it allows this abhorrently cruel ritual slaughter to continue, a practice that should never have been accepted in Australia in the first place.

Dear Ministers and Senators (and other relevant parties)
The Australian government recently shipped hundreds of thousands of live animals to the Middle East, knowing these animals would be violently slaughtered during the eid al adha, but the savage ritual slaughter of Australian animals doesn't stop on Middle Eastern soil, it is also carried out on Australian soil.
The Australian goverment must stop claiming that it has the 'best animal welfare pracitices in the world' as this is a claim Australia simply cannot live up to.
Is any Australian animal safe from ritual slaughter? It appears not. Now camels are being slaughtered halal style in the Northern Territory (Australia), and one has to wonder if the Australian government is policing slaughterhouses that slaughter animals in ways which are simply barbaric, however the Australian government would clearly rather please minority groups then ensure the process of slaughter is as humane as possible.
It is commonly known that a number of abattoirs in Australia have been granted an exemption, to cut the throats of animals without pre stunning.
To deny the very animals that sustain us even the small amount of relief that stunning gives before the moment of death, is truly unconscionable! We must have laws that everybody adhere to regardless of religion. How can one religion be exempted from the laws of the land but not another? The same laws should apply equally to all citizens, irrespective of religion or culture and those laws should be evidence based and adhere to the highest ethical standards.
It is very important to note that those who are sending this letter from a country other than Australia, shall not purchase imported Australian made products, unless the Australian government takes a strong stand and bans ritual slaughter.
Many countries have banned ritual slaughter because it is barbaric, but not Australia. Australia should lead the world in the ethical treatment of animals but instead it is setting a shocking example for other countries to follow. If Australia allows non-stunned slaughter it will nullify efforts to have stunning broadly accepted in the likes of the Middle East. Any weakening of the regulations relating to ritual slaughter is clearly a step backwards to third world standards.
I ask that the cruel, sadistic practice of ritual slaughter be banned in Australia.
