    1. The absence of genetic testing in optometric care

Optometrists are outstanding primary health care providers who see a vast amount of patients with ocular disease on a regular basis. We have one chance to bring genetic testing for ocular disease into the profession of optometry and if we don't act now optometrists and optometry students will miss an opportunity to help our patients and expand our scope of practice.

Find out more via. our video interview with Dr. Jerry Rapp on www.OptometryStudents.com

If we make our voices heard, schools and organizations will listen and implement courses in optometric curriculum or residencies that will help students to master this area of care. Once we are armed with the knowledge we are just steps away from practicing the genetic model in optometry, specifically ocular disease. If we decide to address this issue 5 years from now, you can guarantee it will be a costly uphill battle once we realize we missed our chance.

Even if genetic testing and ocular disease is not in your personal future as an optometrist it is still VERY important to support the positive growth of your profession. So please sign your name to this cause so we can show optometry schools and organizations that students care about the growth of optometry. We will keep all participants updated as this movement becomes a reality.

Optometrists, Optometry students and Pre-Optometry students UNITE!
