Vote to have more Women in Congress

Vote to have more Women in Congress

The Issue

For change to happen in this country we have to change who makes the decisions in this country. I would like to propose a new law that requires 50% of the seats in the Senate to be occupied by women.  Each state would be required to send one man and one woman as representatives to the Senate.  The votes for the position of office would be counted the same as they are now but the winners would be based upon their gender.  The man with the highest number of votes and the woman with the highest number of votes would be appointed as Senators regardless of the number of votes received by another person of the same gender.

Women currently hold 89, or 16.6%, of the 539 seats in 112th US Congress – 17, or 17 % of the 100 seats in the Senate, and 72, or 16.6 % of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives.

The number of females in the United States as of Oct. 1, 2010 is 157.2 million. The number of males was 153.2 million according to U.S. Census Bureau.  Women hold the majority in this country but the gender that dominate the Congress, make the decisions, and create the laws, especially those about women’s rights, are men.  Does this seem right, or even fair? Our Constitution states that all men are created equal. That is a general term which I assume includes women (or at least I hope it does in this day and age) but the way our system of government (not to mention the world) is set up, it makes it difficult for women’s voices to really be heard.

I would like to see this law be applied to all branches of the government.  This would include the House of Representatives but since it is based on population I’m not sure how this would work. But I’m sure there is a way. I’m open to suggestions.  It could also be a part of the Executive and Judicial Branches, having the President and V.P. have to be of opposite genders.  The Supreme Court would have to have at least 4 female members.  I also think Supreme Court Justices should have limited terms. (10 yrs)

Men run the country (and the world) for the most part. As a man I admit we haven’t done a very good job in the last 2000 years.  I think it is time to give the gentler sex a chance.  Women are naturally more nurturing and caring than men and should have the same rights as men when it comes to making the decisions that affect the country as a whole.  I believe most women would think twice before sending their sons (or daughters) off to war, letting a child go hungry,  denying health care or housing for those in need.

Granted some women in power are as self serving as many men in power are.  But when it comes to the ‘bottom line’ I think most women are less concerned with how much it’s going to cost and more concerned with doing what is right.

Some may ask what if two great women are running for office? In Washington State we have two great women senators, and I would hate to lose either of them. I feel having 50 women in office would be better than having two from one state, especially seeing as we only have 17 women in the Senate now.
