Deep Geothermal can be exploited using existing and redeployed construction and engineering resources owned by "big oil". Its most exotic feature is the configuration of electric generation plants situated over wells bored by American companies already in business.

Want JOBS? Deep Geothermal will put thousands of American engineers and construction resources right to work and each generating station can be fully productive in months. Stop subsidizing big oil! Subsidize big ENERGY.

And the best feature of all: the net cost per kilowatt hour generated of Deep Geothermal is much lower than nuclear, coal, oil, gas, solar or wind because its "footprint" is smaller, its fuel mining and transport costs are nil, its pollution is zero, and it puts conventional tools and materials to work that have been around for a hundred years and will be around for another. Besides that, you can put a solar farm right on top -- if you want to risk it. Unfortunately the wildly fluctuating prices for oil and gas will not be around for media and commodities traders to manipulate. Pity poor Wall Street.

Geothermal energy generation has several manifestations that you probably already know about. Where there are geysers and hot springs near the earth's surface (as in Iceland, New Zealand, Idaho and Santa Rosa, California to name a few), hot water and steam are used directly to heat buildings and steam is used to drive turbines to generate electricity.

Deep geothermal, though, based on existing technology and proved in practice, has been ignored.Funding is non-existent. Meanwhile, the deeper one goes below the surface of the earth, the hotter it gets. About 10 miles down -- everywhere on earth! -- it's at least 1000°F. A patent, filed in 2002 and granted in 2007, provides an even more refined, less costly means to exploit the wealth of raw heat beneath our feet than the very efficient plants already on-stream around the world. The geothermal plant described in US Patent 7251938 has a surface footprint of as small as 20 acres and has to go only as deep as current oil & gas wells.

Moderately sized plants can each power the equivalent of 135,000 homes and feed the existing electrical power grid. Such plants could be sited unobtrusively throughout power hungry Long Island,NY, for instance, and provide all its energy. Virtually every county in the US could host such a plant, safely and securely. Geothermal plants generate electricity using the earth's natural heat, are safer and cleaner than nuclear, oil or coal-fired plants, and produce NO waste by-products. A military base, large or small, could secure its energy needs entirely on premise without any outside resources, 24 hours per day, rain or shine. Guam, West Point, Edwards Air Force Base or Ft. Bragg could serve as examples.

As an added benefit, sewage and stormwater run-off can be used to supplement water inputs used to produce steam! A geothermal plant with equivalent output of the Indian Point nuclear plant is about half its capital cost. The drilling technology required is much less dangerous and technically equivalent to that required by deep &/or off-shore oil & gas wells.
