From the Hill: Foreign Aid Strategy Needed
From the Hill: Foreign Aid Strategy Needed
Foreign assistance is essential to preventing war, but this country's foreign aid is still based on legislation written in the 1960s. Rep. Howard Berman (CA) has introduced legislation calling on the president to reform U.S. foreign aid and create a global development strategy to make it as effective as possible. Urge your representative to co-sponsor this bill.
Quote of the Week: Sen. Feingold on Kenya
"For some time I have worried about the very real possibility that political instability in Kenya could worsen and that armed conflict could return if these underlying rule of law problems are not addressed,"
- Senator Russ Feingold in a speech on the Senate floor in early June.

Urge Congress to Improve Foreign Aid Efforts
With no overarching strategy for global development, U.S. aid is often disbursed with little coordination and a lack of strategic direction. Adding to this problem is the number of organizations involved: currently, 12 federal departments, 25 agencies and more than 60 government offices oversee U.S. foreign aid.
The Initiating Foreign Assistance Reform Act (H.R. 2139), introduced by Rep. Howard Berman (CA), calls on the president to create a global development strategy to make the money the U.S. spends on foreign aid as effective as possible. Please urge your member to co-sponsor this legislation, which will help improve U.S. efforts to reduce global poverty and prevent deadly conflict.
