The San Francisco Metropolitan Transit Authority is in trouble. Its revenues are down and costs are up. To deal with the budget shortfall, Muni is cutting back on service while raising prices which just leads to fewer riders and even less revenue!

Cities like Portland have made transit free downtown. This gets more people out of cars and into transit. This could be a significant boon to local businesses, help working people save money, and attract tourists.

San Francisco's Mayor Newsom has been a bold leader in the past -- for example when he started performing same-sex marriages. He should be a bold leader now and make San Francisco Muni free. It's good for business, it's good for the environment, and it's good for San Franciscans.
