"Fix Our Schools! Don't Close 'Em!"
The Issue
NYC Department of Education Chancellor Joel Klein plans to close 19 schools at the end of the school year. All of the schools scheduled to close are in low income communities of color and parents, teachers, and community leaders have been speaking our against these schools closing for months. Despite the overwhelming response from parents and community leaders against the school closings, the Panel on Educational Policy voted to go forward with the plan to close these schools.
Closing schools down without addressing the problems does a disservice to NYC kids.
Stand with parents, NY Communities Members and the Coalition for Educational Justice and tell Chancellor Klien that NYC won't stand for anything less than real reform in our educational system.
Demand:
1.) A motatorium on school closings and co-locations until there is an independant soure of information on their impact.
2.) Establish a School Transformation Zone to improve low-performing schools that includes schools on the state's list of 34 "persitantly failing" schools to provide support and resources and to prevent closings.
3.) Involve parents and other stakeholders in decision-making about the future of our schools.
