That's how many individual baby harp seals the Canadian Fisheries Minister has said sealers will be allowed to slaughter this year. Almost all of them will be bludgeoned to death or shot and then skinned before they reach the age of 3 months. This is the world's single-largest slaughter of marine mammals – and it's driven by both the greed of the fur industry and consumers' vanity.

Many of the thousands of young seals slated to be killed this year will not even have eaten their first solid meal or learned how to swim before being cruelly slaughtered. The spiked clubs of the sealers will be used to crush their soft skulls – often while other seals watch and wail in terror. Sealers often hook the animals in the eye, cheek or mouth in an attempt to avoid damaging their fur. They then drag the seal pups across the ice and tear the skin off their small bodies, which are typically discarded like bloody rubbish on Canada's ice floes.

In just a few short weeks, tens of thousands of gentle baby seals could be shot or have their skulls crushed by sealers

It is important that there is one petition in 2012 requesting that the Canadian government listen to the outrage this slaughter causes world wide.
