Stop demanding the names of disabled tenants who live in the suburbs of Cleveland.

Stop demanding the names of disabled tenants who live in the suburbs of Cleveland.

The Issue

It is a fair housing violation to demand Emerald Development and Economic Network (EDEN) to release the names or addresses of their tenants to the suburban communities of Greater Cleveland.  EDEN serves a disabled population of mentally ill, AIDS/HIV positive tenants, and those struggling with an addiction by paying their rent or managing their building.  The suburbs do not need the location of disabled people residing in their community.  The risk of these tenants being targeted for hate crimes or their private landlords being harassed for renting to disabled people is too great.

Responded
November 21, 2013 The First Suburbs Consortium by no means is seeking information concerning the identity of EDEN clients living in EDEN housing. This is not an accurate characterization of First Suburbs’ position. Rather, the Consortium is seeking only information concerning the properties that receive the benefit of government subsidy through EDEN in First Suburbs communities for a very limited use. Other programs that provide such subsidies to owners of properties have worked with First Suburbs communities to ensure that owners benefiting from government subsidies are in compliance with community laws and housing codes. In the past there have been significant problems with owners of subsidized properties who took advantage of the subsidies but failed to comply with local housing codes and other laws. Because First Suburbs communities have been aware of these situations, by knowing these properties, we have been able to work with the agencies to correct these problems. The First Suburbs Consortium has attempted to work cooperatively with EDEN to form an agreement in this respect and will continue to pursue these efforts and seek to build a stronger relationship with EDEN. Mayor Earl Leiken Chair First Suburbs Consortium
