Have you ever been on a brand drug that was just way too expensive or that your insurance company wouldn't cover? Did you then switch to a generic "alternative" that didn't work as well or simply did nothing? I have and I am sick of it. So are many people I know. I even know of doctors who won't prescribe a generic version of certain drugs because ALL their patients say the pills don't work.
Personally, having tried at least 6 generic versions of the same brand drug I can say that not only are some ineffective, others have actually made me worse. Many of these generics are made in China (remember the melamine in dog food?) and other third world countries. I want the FDA not only to analyze a generic once, but to do un-announced periodic spot checks obtained from the consumer supply line, the average drugstore shelf. Whether it's antibiotics, antihistamines, tranquilizers, whatever, we need to be guaranteed that what we are taking is both SAFE and EFFECTIVE.
