Pennsylvanians are going hungry. A recent article in the Philadelphia Inquirer shows that food stamps often run out 3 weeks in to the month. When they do, families must turn to food pantries to fill the gap. The number of families has nearly doubled over the last few years. More than 400,000 Philadelphians rely on food pantires, and around 40 percent of them are children.

Despite the skyrocketing need for food, the Pennsylvania state legislature has slashed funding for the State Food Purchase Program (SFPP), which helps fund organizations that purchase food for pantries.

Tell the Pennsylvania state legislature and the Governor that they can't cut programs as vital as this one at such a trying time!

Don't Cut Funding for the State Food Purchase Program

Greetings,

The Philadelphia Enquirer recently ran an article that showed the inadequacy of our safety net. Many families who rely on food stamps are running out of benefits 3 weeks in to the month, leaving them with a week to fend for themselves.

Many rely on food pantries to get them through to the next month, but they can be tricky to navigate and can be unreliable. This year has seen another increase of families who are hungry throughout Pennsylvania. The number of families has nearly doubled over the last few years. More than 400,000 Philadelphians rely on food pantires, and around 40 percent are children. Despite the alarming uptick, the budget for the State Food Purchasing Program which is a main funder for many food pantries, has been cut. Once in 2007 and again this year.

I am writing to urge you not to cut the State Food Purchasing Program, or any program that helps the hungry, any further. During such a perilous economic time, cutting essential programs like the State Food Purchasing Program will be detrimental to many.
